Receipts View

Led the design of Yahoo Mail’s new Receipts View, an all-in-one hub that helps 6 million Yahoo Mail Shoppers organize receipts, track packages, monitor returns, and identify refunds effortlessly.

STATUS: Launched in 2022, with integration spanning from 2022 to 2023

PLATFORM: Native APP: iOS, Android, Desktop

DURATION: 2 Years (Nov 2021 - Nov 2023)

TEAM: 3 Product Managers, 4 Data Analysts, 4 Researchers, 20+ Engineers

How did it start?

Over 30% of Yahoo Mail’s 60 Million users rely on Yahoo Mail for online shopping, receiving 15 million daily post-purchase emails containing essential details like receipts, delivery updates, and refunds.

For Yahoo Mail, this is a major opportunity to boost user retention. As users track their purchases, they repeatedly open the app, with Receipts View becoming their key entry point. This frequent engagement not only builds user habits but also drives revenue growth through personalized shopping content, premium features, advertising, and partner integrations.

Yahoo Mail’s Opportunity

After conducting user research, we identified a key problem—one that became the foundation of my design goal to solve.

Pain Point

Shoppers get lost in their inboxes, struggling to find receipts, track packages, and keep up with returns

—all because there’s no centralized solution.

What I contributed…

I joined the team in Nov 2021 with the mission of upgrading Receipts View—redesigning the interface and introducing new post-purchase-related features. I led the 0 to 1 design from research to launch by collaborating with product managers and developers

Final Design Overview

Transfer your inbox into a seamless shopping assistant, effortlessly organizing your receipts, tracking packages, and managing returns and refunds—all in one hub.

Say goodbye to searching through cluttered promotional emails for order confirmations, delivery updates, and refund notifications.

Design Highlight#1

Visual Hierarchy Updated
Prioritizing important information and efficiently using space

Before

  1. Hierarchy: The "Price" is placed below the product name, making it less prominent compared to other details.

  2. Alignment: Key details (Merchant name, Product name, Price) are stacked, increasing vertical space usage.

  3. Structure: The layout separates the "Date" and "Price" on opposite sides, which might make scanning details less intuitive

After

  1. Improved Hierarchy: Based on information’s priority, highlighting "Price" and Marchant name, making it more noticeable and scannable.

  2. Efficient Use of Space: The details are presented in a single row, reducing vertical space usage and improving readability.

  3. Enhanced Balance: The new layout creates a cleaner, more balanced visual presentation with better alignment of elements.

Increase user case coverage which addresses the diversity of user transactions, improves the clarity and recall of receipts, and ensures a seamless experience even when data limitations exist.

User case #1: Digital services receipts
IExpanded coverage to include all receipts tied to payments, making it more comprehensive for users managing both physical and digital transactions

User case #2: Ridesharing app receipts
Extracts destination addresses and displays them as product names

User case #3: Fallback
In cases where the product name cannot be extracted or is unavailable, we show “Your receipt” in the product name section

How did the design updates perform?

The redesigned Receipts View was initially launched in October 2022 as part of the Yahoo Mail 2022 Update MVP feature. Within four months of launch, the new design boosted usage by 90%.

Recognizing its potential, the product team continued to enhance the post-purchase experience, adding more functionalities over the following years. The success of Receipts View not only drove sustained user engagement but also established a foundation for long-term product expansion.
